‘ECCAN Community Heat’

(02/02/2025) The ECCAN Community Heat Event on February 3, 2025, explored strategies for sustainable and community-driven heating solutions. Key points included the promotion of community-owned, not-for-profit models and the need for clear communication about costs. Discussions highlighted examples from Aberdeen, Bristol, and Midlothian, emphasizing transparency, feasibility studies, and avoiding monopolies. Challenges regarding grid capacity, mixed tenancies, and conservation area approvals were also raised. Participants stressed collective action, the role of government grants for community-led initiatives, and sharing knowledge to drive progress. The importance of behavioural changes to prevent energy waste was highlighted. There were calls for stronger engagement from the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) and exploration of community benefits, equity stakes, and financial protections. Upcoming consultations and committee meetings were noted as opportunities to advance these discussions and strategies.
